Proper Windows XP ASPI Layer Intallation

Step 1: Clean up Bad Install

If you have not previously installed ASPI on XP go to step 2.

If you have already installed on XP, run the aspichk.exe program installed in your adaptec/aspi folder (usually c:\Adaptec\aspi).

If you see all four files listed as shown.....

then you must delete the WOWPOST.EXE and the WINASPI.DLL files, they do not belong. Both of these files can be found in the c:\Windows\systems folder.

Step 2: Proper Installation

If you have not done so, download the latest aspi version from Adaptec here .

After it unpacks, open a Command Prompt window (Start Menu->Programs->Accesories->Command Prompt). Change the current directory to the installed Adaptec folder (usually cd c:\adaptec\aspi).

Type in the command prompt window the word "install" (without the qoutes). You should see...

Depending on your OS, re-run install with the appropriate option....in the case of XP, type "install XP32". You should see this....

Step 3: Check the installation

Reboot the computer, then run the aspichk.exe program installed in your adaptec/aspi folder (usually c:\Adaptec\aspi). You should see...

It is OK for it to say there are missing components.

Step 4: Check Operation

Now, open Archive Creator, be sure that the Use Apsi option is on, if not, turn it on, quit archive creator and restart it. Check if your drive is now detected. NOTE: Firewire and USB drives are not compatible with Adaptec Aspi. If your drives are detected then you are done. If not, there is one more registry setting that must be added.

Step 5: Additional Registry Setting

Download this zip file and unzip it on you hard drive...ATAPI.zip

Go to the file you just saved and double click on it. This will update your registry.

Note: As when installing any drivers or system componants, proper backup procedures should be undertaken before installing.

Reboot the computer and run Archive Creator and see if your drives are detected.
